You don’t need to get this perfect to get a costing from us – a rough measure is genuinely enough to start with. Here’s how to take one properly.

What you’ll need

A metal tape measure, not a fabric or cloth one – they stretch slightly, and on a made-to-measure order that difference matters more than you’d think.

Measuring the width

  • Measure across the window at the top, middle and bottom of the frame or recess.
  • Use the narrowest of the three measurements – window frames are rarely perfectly square, even in newer homes.

Measuring the drop

  • For curtains, measure from where the pole or track will actually sit down to where you want the fabric to end – sill, or floor.
  • For blinds, measure from the top of the recess (or fixing point) down to the sill or floor.

Recess or outside the frame?

This changes the numbers significantly, so it’s worth deciding early. A recess fit sits neatly inside the window frame; an outside fit covers the frame and extends beyond it, which usually means more light blocked and a bigger-looking window.

Why we still come and check

Even careful home measurements can be out by enough to matter once fabric’s cut. That’s why our free measuring service always ends with us confirming everything in person before anything’s made – it’s the difference between a good fit and a slightly-off one you’re stuck with.
